Which is the Adagio of Bruckner's Adagios? I don't know... Symphony #9 was his first work I heard and for a long time I believed its "finale" is the greatest music I'd ever heard. After that, I got to know Nos. 4,7,5,8,6 and each time, when listening to their slow movements I thought they were peaks of his creativity. Possibly, mvmt.3 of No. 8 is the most "representative", so to say. Mvmt.3 of No.9 is possibly the most "spiritual", mvmt.2 of No.6 is possibly the most "intimate", and mvmt.2 of No.7 is possibly my favourite. I think, the adagio of No.2 is his first slow movement with all trhe qualities of a Great Bruckner Adagio.
As for Mahler, currently I adore the Adagio of his Fourth. And am appalled by both slow movements of his Tenth :(
