Neemi Jarvi and his son have recorded a 4-disc set of the orchestral music of Stenhammer on the BIS label. I believe that the Musical Heritage Society may be offering a special on it right now. You do need one other BIS single disc to get a composition they recorded that is not included in the 4-disc set, but the set gives you the 2 Symphonies, 2 Piano Concertos, and a lot of other music. I think that the original BIS issue is still available, and it was 4 discs for the price of 3. There is also a Naxos disc of the 2nd Symphony if you want a sampler of Stenhammer's music, but I still think that the 1st Symphony is better. Chandos offers a few minutes of all that survives of the sketches for a 3rd Symphony on their recording of the 1st Piano Concerto. There is a famous photograph of Sibelius, Nielsen and other Scandinavian composers at a music festival in Copenhagen in 1919 in which Sibelius is in the middle and everyone else is looking at him--except Nielsen! I find it very symbolic of the way the composers in the photograph are still recognized today: Sibelius? Of course! Nielsen? Yes, but still not as famous as Sibelius! Stenhammer? Halvorsen? Who are THEY? --Warren
