Charles Dutoit established the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (MSO) on the map and has earned respect from the classical music world. Some of his recording are testimonial to that fact [Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé, Berlioz Symphony Fantastique have won awards (if not more)... and has done other great recordings too - many earning very favorable international reviews]. That said, yes, in a way he was quite tough with members of his orchestra to the point where things boiled over earlier this year with flying accusation of harassment and verbal abuse. Tyrant qualifies i suppose. I think a change at the helm was overdue some years ago as there were rumors of him leaving the MSO. We're still looking for a conductor. - Ara A.
