I have to say that the Masur/Gewandhaus recording from the 70's is among the most beautiful I've heard: barely-there strings, mysterious horn, and a marvelously paced crescendo to the first big climax. But I confess I haven't heard Celibidache's or Karajan's Fourth!

Yes, that opening is among the most beautiful, as is the opening to the Second, Third, Fifth, Seventh...you get the idea! Perhaps the most elemental of all is the Ninth's opening, where again HvK is supreme. But my personal favorite is the Seventh with its quintessential cello melody.
