Anton was actually quite learned, tho not in any conventional way. He pursued courses of study far outside music. These included science, among other things. With his customary industry and completely dedication to the task, he always did well, as the many certificates he collected from his courses of study attest.
Keep in mind that examinations, as well as courses of study in the past were, by comparision to today, extrordinarily difficult. Multiple choice? Grading on a curve? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Often, you sat in front of the authority, or the commitee, and you were grilled. You looked directly at them, they stared at you. No place to hide, no crib notes, no cheating. You had to know your stuff down to the molecular level, so to speak. Bruckner always ped, usually with honors or special mention.
I bring this up because Bruckner has been historically painted as a dunce. He wasn't. His problem lay in personality, not intelligence. The way he behaved around people led them to think he was simple.
Today's young people would have a hard time competing with Bruckner, even given the span of time that's ped and all of the advances that've be made. Most kids today lack any education at all, outside of some narrow application, like internet programming. Bruckner, by contrast, would tower over most of todays kids in the breath and depth of his knowledge.
