I have made a habit of collecting transcriptions of orchestral works, primarily for piano(s) but also for chamber ensembles. The group around Arnold Schoenberg in Berlin in the 1920's did some fascinating work in their chamber transcriptions, of which several recordings have already been made of works by Mahler, including a previous Capriccio release by the Linos Ensemble of a chamber arrangement of the Mahler 4th. I enjoyed the Nonet transcription of the B7 by the Linos Ensemble because I believe that I can always learn something new about the music when I listen to it in different transcriptions. I also try to remember that the majority of such transcriptions were made before recordings of the music of Mahler or Bruckner were readily available and that these transcriptions were, apart from conservatory exercizes, attempts to help popularize the music of composers such as Bruckner. Bruckner himself never heard his 5th Symphony except in a two-piano transcription,I believe, and even if he might have objected to textual tamperings he apparently did not object to the transcription in principle. Of course, if recordings had been readily available in his day, he might have felt differently about the concept of transcriptions being ways to disseminate his music.
Re: br arrangements of Bruckner, I believe that if you go to the JPC website you may still find a recording of a br ensemble doing exerpts from Bruckner's music, along with the music of other composers. I'm sorry, but I can't remember the name of the ensemble or disc or the label it is on, but it may be towards the end of the Bruckner catalog of recordings, after the "regular" orchestral recordings of the Symphonies. --Warren
