>>Brahms is fine, but Bruckner has a kind of unsurped essentiality!<<
It seems we have opinions that share similar valuations... Although Bruckner started late when composing his symphonies, he produced them rather quickly thereafter (and i don't buy the notion that Bruckner composed the same symphony nine different times). Whereas Brahms, took over 20 years to complete his 1st symphony - haunted by the ghost of Beethoven (not to mention the wide gapin time of his two piano concertos). Yes, Brahms symphonies are fine. However, Bruckner's symphonies casts a deep, long shadow on them as far as i'm concerned. Do you recall what Tschaikovosky said of Brahms? "What a giftless B*stard". Can anyone here suppose there's some truth in that statement? Don't get me wrong, i don't dislike Brahms' music.
< Collequially expressed, but essentially correct. Although not much fan of Baroque music, however there are few, notable exceptions - J.S.Bach, Vivaldi, Corlli and others... I just find it fascinating how, two composers of different era (J.S.Bach and Bruckner) and of different styles, can touch one's soul profoundly... < Indeed! The notion of three "BIG" B's should either be scrapped (for the of Brahms over Bruckner's was cirstantial), or revised to include Bruckner and perhaps other notable composers of "B".
