I agree with both responses to the original posting. The Samale-Mazzuca-Phillips-Cohrs reconstruction is superior to the Carragan, but of course it has the benefit of later discoveries, I believe. I have heard the rumor that William Carragan, who recently lost his wife to cancer and should be receiving our condolences, may be working on another completion of the Ninth (this information from a BRUCKNER JOURNAL correspondent in England.) There is another recording of the Ninth with the S-M-P-C completion on the Sonarte label with excellent notes about the surviving state of the Finale mcripts as well a discussion of how Bruckner composed and revised his music. I will post the information about that recording when I can get to it. I also agree that any of the completions so far are ultimately disappointing when compared to the work of Bruckner himself and the transfiguring conclusion of the Adagio with its quotation from the opening of the Seventh Symphony in the horns. However, I will encourage such efforts by musicologists and gladly buy recordings of their work just to have some idea of what we are otherwise missing, in agreement with the argument that in music, unlike writing and painting, we must rely on the efforts of others (musicologists and musicians) to make incomplete works accessible to us. For that reason I am happy to have the Deryck Cooke and other completions of Mahler's Tenth Symphony, Brian Newbould's realizations of Schubert's symphonies, and Anthony Payne's completion of Elgar's Third Symphony, among others. I would enjoy hearing from others on this subject!
