Both recorded "reconstructions" are interesting from a musicologist's perspective but their overall impact on listening to them is disappointing. Given the monumental beauty of the extant movements to the Ninth, one should have expected Bruckner to crown his last work with a fugal apotheosis to end all fugal apotheoses. Unlike the excellent Dereck Cooke performing version of the finale to Mahler's Tenth, which had been completely laid out in a five-staff mcript and had been largely orchestrated by the composer, the Bruckner finale is a stitching together of hundreds of fragments, found all over the place -- some dated, some not -- all of which undoubtedly would have been subject to Bruckner's penchant for revision. Like I said, they're interesting, but somehow Bruckner's soul is not there.
