I completely agree with this review, the recommendations and the pans. Obviously a sensitive, decerning and knowledgable listener.

Top choice goes to Tennstedt/Berlin Phil on EMI, which may not be easily available. It may not please those who like rapid tempi, but it combines all of the elements of Bruckner?s music in proper and effective balance without shortchanging any.

Also excellent is the Karajan/Berlin Phil on DG, much better than the restrained earlier performance on EMI. I highly recommend it.

Bohm?s recording on London has been consistently admired for a long time. I haven?t heard it in over a decade, so I can only give a partial recommendation, but I thought it was quite good at the time.

Excellent in an unexpected way is Klemperer/Philharmonia on EMI (recentlty reissued on 2lp vinyl by Testament). Unusually quick, propulsive tempi and an interesting conception of the score which avoids the majesty of Karajan or the mysticism of Tennstedt yet finds it?s own valid voice and insight in the music.

Bruno Walter/Columbia SymOrchis very good as well, though he uses the Haas edition which omits the cymbal crash in the finale ? a mistake.

Solti/CSO and Muti/Berlin Phil give excellent accounts for those who don?t want to dwell on Bruckner?s pious spirituality ? which you don?t need to do. The music is robust enough and FINE ENOUGH to permit
various interpretations. Solti is superb, capturing a ringing orchestral sheen and energy without relying on hectic tempi. Muti adds a sense of warmth and involvement missed by many; he conveys the carrying that Jochum transmits to the music but Muti doesn?t have to goof around with the tempi or shortchange the
brass. The Berlin play marvelously.

Furtwangler ? some of the recordings use the Lowe edition; I?ve never liked his way of shortchanging the power in Bruckner?s music that Karajan transmits so well. But there are many who swear by his recordings.

NOT RECOMMENDED
Haitink ? even the Penguin Guides thought that he falls short.
Marek Jankowski ? forget about it
Knappertsbusch ? uses the discredited Lowe edition
Lopez-Cobos ? wimpy recording of the 1st version (1874)
Jochum ? if you want mystical, go to Tennstedt
