I try to listen to all the artists, though I don't accept what many of them say, and I flat out ignore others. But a few have some very interesting things to say about art and how they approach art. Da Vinci questioned the idea that a piece of art was ever really finished. I go until it feels right.
Also your post makes a good point on the question of what is really "cheating" when it comes to art. In high school they try to teach how to freehand. They offer tools for the kids, like perspective and using a grid, but people really love a person who can freehand and especially with great detail; people seem mezmerized by detail.
Most people don't take into account, that most of the "great" artists used some kind of utility to help them get their idea onto the canvas easily, so their energy can be spent on the idea, or the image.
It is the image that stirs people. It is the new that will, with time, sweep them away.
