: There has always been this tension in many peoples mind between Mystical spirituality and Evangelical. To me there is no tension. It's two sides of the same relationship to Christ Himself. He is the one who taught us to "enter your closet and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret". He is the same one who commissioned the church with the words, "go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Mysticism taken to the exptreme is nothing more that good hearted pivity. Evangelical extremes lead to arrogant and shallow theology. The balance? Galatians 2:20..."I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.Here is Guyon's "I no longer live...but Christ lives in me" and here is Wesley's "the life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God"I have read Wesley and I have read Guyon. Both servnts have added immesurably to my life.I thing "current trends" are often just leadings back to missing elements. Our problem is we go from one extreme to the other and forget to "take hold of one without letting go of the other".There should be another beatitude: "Blessed are the balanced, they shall not become mentally unglued" :-)
