: Could someone please help with interpretation of this poem
This poem is John Donne speaking to death as if it were a charector. He's telling death that though he feels he's so powerful and scary, he's really not. He says he's a slave to kings and desprate men, kings and desperatemne put him to work. THat he gives a sleep to man a sleep man can get much better from being druged, hence the referance to poppy, and that when we go to Heaven we will live eternally, therefore death will die.
