: I can't decide whether the popularity of PP is soley due to Bunyan's
: expression of previously stifled non-conformist views. Do you think the work itself was worthy of such profound
: popularity or was it just the novelty of a writer of provincial background speaking out on controversial issues?

Pil Prog is definitely a clic for both reasons. It was an expression of new thought for the time peroid, but it also is one of the most perfect allegories ever written in English. The representations are numerous and some run quite deep. Also, in his own preface, Bunyan records that some people he showed the mcripts to said to print it, while others said to trash it. I don't think his contemporaries quite realized the impact this book would have. Plus, many of the first readers of the published book would not have agreed with Bunyans preaching, but they still understood the concept of a spiritual journey.
