: The interesting difference between Luther and Erasmus for me was reflected most clearly in their debate over free will. The debate itself is short and easily accessible to modern lay readers. Erasmus spends a good thirty pages, probably a little under half of his contribution, discussing teh manner in which one should morally engage another in debate. he speaks of openness and charity, as well as sincerity and respect, as essential attitudes required for the pursuit of the good in dialogue with one's fellow man. Luthers response ignores such concerns and is itself fairly vituperative. Just check out the dialogue itself and make up your own mind concerning their gracefullness in the pursuit of salvation.
