He influenced our civilization far more than most people
realize. His ideas on education were quite modern; they
weren't widely adopted until the 1890s; but from then until
now they have played a major role. He paved the way for Luther
to start the Protestant Reformation -- although he tried
desperately to keep it inside the Church and more reasonable.
He was one of the earliest and most eloquent pacifists.
He popularized classical learning. He wrote Latin textbooks
that were still in use 400 years later. And on and on...
