no one knows for sure kristy, but 5 of every 6 Victorian era families smoke opium. The entire Chinese economy ran on opium and silver during that time, and, due to the British intrest in Hong Kong, a lot of opium was in merry ol d England.

bwyond this, Lewis, who's real name was Charles Dodgson, was friends with Italian painters DANTE and WILLIAM ROSSETTI. Dante's mistress Lizzy diesd of an overdose of a hypnotic called chloral. This is a very strong clear liquid used as a hypnotic and bohemian drug. It's a safe bet to say the Dante and William used chloral. I am not so sure about Charles though. He was after all, a Reverend.
