It appears that 42 was somehow a number that he used now and then in his work.

In SNARK, the baker had 42 boxes.....

Then, people of all kinds started looking hard for "magic 42" in things relating to his work - they became "42 Hunters". The 42 you mention is one of those convoluted things that the "42 hunters" were able to create that MIGHT have a little relation to Lewis Carroll, but might relate more to the personality of the "42 Hunter".
