Most uredly not. Louis Carroll was a shy mathematics professor and cleric, Victorian to his bones. The story about the drug references probably got started because a rock group called Jefferson Starship took Carroll's whimsical references to eating mushrooms and such and used them as drug references in their songs. In the highly unlikely event that Carroll knew anything about psychedelic mishrooms and other mind-altering substances, one must remember that in his day drugs were not and were taken as a matter of course by extremely respectable people for all manner of maladies. The Alice books were written in an era of relative innocence, long before it was considered fashionable to make smirky and oh-so-knowing references to drugs in popular culture. Carroll had more important things on his mind. Namely, the creation of clic literature. - John O'Toole
