I have done extensive research on Ecclesiastes and am in the process of writing a commentary on the book myself. I have found two of the most enlightening works on the book thus far from author Peter Kreft (Kreft has two "e's" in the name but the post won't let me type it that way because the spelling offends the U.S. Congress somehow), philosopher/theologian at Boston College. He has truly captured the essence of Qohelet's message (author of Ecclesiastes)in his books: Three Philosophies of Life (a look at Ecclesiastes, , and Song of Songs) and Christianity for Modern Pagans (a survey of Blaise Pascal's Pensees that correlate to Ecclesiastes). A good technical work is by Author Tremper Longman III (NICOT Series) Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary. This is a book that has been all but destroyed by a modernistic attempt at systematical theology with a book that was written from a Hebraic, eastern perspective. The Essence of the book? The futility of a life apart from a true relationship with our Creator and Friend, and the subsequent pursuit of meaning through various hedonistic expressions. The Message of the book? Godly Hedonism. Love God; enjoy Him, and do whatever you please. This is in line with the great preacher Jonathan Edwards modification of the Westminster Confession..."The Chief end of man is to Glorify God BY enjoying Him forever"
