: The new book is pedantic and therefore, boring as a direct result. For anyone who has read the other books, the numerous and constant attempts to bring new readers "up to speed" are grossly overdone. I am laboriously working my way through the book, however, I become annoyed, almost angry, when we are forced into a "mini" anthropology lesson which all of us who are fans would have learned long ago. For instance, upon exploring a site unfamiliar to Ayla, Jondalar remarks that a particular cave is used for flint knapping since flint knapping produces razor sharp shards which could prove hazardous to others. I believe Jean Auel is attempting to introduce the idea that people were beginning to develop industry outside of the home as well as educational centers. Great! But, if you read the other books in the series, don't you already know that Ayla knows all about flint knapping and that Jondalar does not need to tell her that flint knapping produces sharp shards as a by-product? I almost had to throw the book across the room. I don't remember the other books having this preachy, educational (at the expense of the reader's enjoyment) tenor. I will finish the book because I've started it but I am hopeful that things will improve.
