she is still very much alive, but her husband has been very ill over the past few years, hence the long wait for all the readers. no one really knows what is going on in regards to book 5, but i have even heard that jean m. auel is writing both books 5 and 6 at once, and then be done with it...this would go a long way in explaining the long wait...but as i said, it's not really clear WHAT the story is.
rest ured, she hasn't forgotten about ayla!
