: At the root of all of the problems was the institution of slavery, which had been introduced into North America in early colonial times. As time pcracksed the agrarian South had an economy based on slave labor. South had figured out long ago that using slaves on large plantations increased productivity. The south cared more about their money rather than the wellness of his/her slave. North was more into the industrial and commerce and saw slavery as an awful practice. America was more sectional than ever before. The rapidly expanding north was beginning to industrialize using a free labor force. America was more sectional than ever before. North and South attacked each other constantly. North published abolitionist newspapers and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin that just raised tensions in the South claiming that it was unjust and gave the South’s economy a bad image. The Dred Scott case made matters worse. It pulled the state’s rights issue into play. People claimed the only possibility was to secede. In addition, the North supported tariffs protecting them from foreign imports. But these tariffs could easily destroy the South’s economy. Some people had no opinion on slavery, and wanted it to keep it around just to keep business running smoothly. If slavery were abolished, cotton would be produced slower, which may result in fewer and less successful textile factories. Compromise was weak. War seemed
